Interview The Alchemy of Pain - David Wetherelt

Our Story

Like Minds was born from a deeply personal journey—one of struggle, discovery, and the profound realization that so much of the suffering in our world is preventable once we truly understand the human brain, body, and spirit.

Our founder, David Wetherelt, spent much of his life searching for answers. Diagnosed late in life with Autism and ADHD, David spent decades living with intense emotional pain, misunderstood behaviors, and a deep sense of confusion that impacted his career, his health, his relationships—even his sense of self. Like so many others, he had no idea that he was neurodivergent. And no one around him—despite years of therapy, self-help programs, addiction treatment, and spiritual exploration—saw it either.

It wasn’t until everything unraveled that David found the beginning of a new path. After a year in residential treatment, facing the truth of his addiction and unraveling years of masking and self-denial, he began to uncover a radical new understanding of who he was—and what he was not. What he had once called character flaws or failures turned out to be differences in wiring, inherited neurodivergent traits, and physiological patterns rooted in both genetics and environment.

That realization changed everything.

David dove headfirst into research—genetics, nutrition, psychology, neuroscience, trauma recovery, and emerging work in neurodiversity. He connected with groundbreaking thinkers and practitioners, including functional medicine experts, geneticists, and neurodivergent researchers. He explored ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science, always guided by a singular desire: to alleviate unnecessary suffering.

In the process, David discovered that his story was not unique.

Many people with undiagnosed neurodivergence—Autism, ADHD, OCD, Dyslexia, sensory sensitivities—go through life misunderstood, over-medicated, or mislabeled, their true needs unmet. These same people often struggle with addiction, anxiety, depression, and complex relationship challenges, not because they are broken, but because the systems around them never understood their needs in the first place.

Like Minds was founded to change that.

We are a community of seekers, educators, peer coaches, and advocates. We believe that healing begins with understanding—of the brain, the body, the gut, and most of all, the self. We believe in screening for neurodiversity first, in supporting nutrition and lifestyle next, and in developing trauma-informed, whole-person care for sustainable recovery and thriving.

David’s story is at the heart of what we do. It’s a story of transformation, of hard-earned wisdom, and of the powerful hope that comes from helping others walk a similar path—with compassion, dignity, and the tools they’ve always deserved.

If you're reading this and something in your own story feels familiar, you’re not alone.

You’re among Like Minds.
